Pet Symmetry have announced their new album Big Symmetry, out May 2nd via Storm Chaser LTD / Asian Man Records, and present a new single, “Big Mileage” available on all streaming platforms. The album will contain 12 catchy melodic emo anthems including "Big Mileage" and the three other previously released singles "Big Engagement", "Big Island" and "Big Steve" which can all be streamed below.
Pet Symmetry is the Chicago-based trio of Evan Weiss (Into It. Over It.), Marcus Nuccio (Ratboys), and Erik Czaja (Dowsing). For years, it’s been catchy rock anthems, sarcastic jingles, and songs that make you wonder if they even know what a healthy relationship is. Big Symmetry is the first record where they put their emotional rollercoaster of angst aside and focused on the things they actually care about. This is more than just a loud album with non-stop hooks. It’s a love letter to everything they care about, ranging from big milestones, to everyday moments, to inanimate objects.
In early 2021, Pet Symmetry planned on promoting their album Future Suits, but found themselves with a problem: As the world tried to figure out how to live with Covid-19, their touring plans were put on indefinite hold. In true Pet Symmetry fashion, they saw this as an opportunity to really make the most of their downtime. They packed up their gear, booked a remote cabin in the woods of Makanda, IL and started working on a new album. Just the boys, some psychedelics, a whole lot of snow, a deck of cards, and a t-shirt prank. Big Symmetry was born.
Following a string of singles, today’s “Big Mileage” is a testament to the deep affection for the band van’s perfect mix of reliability and quirks (it also fails to mention her pungent smells of old fast food wrappers and spilled coffee). The track is an immediate earworm, opening with an absolutely infectious chant of the van’s name - Vanessa. Weiss’ lyrics are charmingly bittersweet over a rebounding bass line, surging percussion and swelling guitar: “Spilled your guts on every U.S. highway // Broke the glass and lost the seats // I lived with you // Laughed with you // Loved with you.”
Weiss elaborates on the track: “I feel a special connection to my cars. I’ve written several songs about all of them throughout the years. Vanessa The Van was one of the best vehicles I had ever owned. It took me all around the United States and Canada for 10 years. 350K miles. Never acted up. Always reliable. Always good to the band. Always safe. Finally it came time to sell it and I was frankly heartbroken but knew it was time. This song is about letting go of the ones you love.
Pet Symmetry didn’t initially set out to write an album full of big love songs. At first they just wanted to hang out with each other and write an album that rocked. An album with big sounds, lots of energy, and songs that are fun to play. Leave it to Pet Symmetry to unintentionally create an album that radiates love. Love for each other, love for life, and for all the weird, wonderful connections that make living it worthwhile.
