Origami Angel

Origami Angel is a rock band from Washington D.C., made up of singer and guitarist Ryland Heagy and drummer Pat Doherty. Formed in 2016, the band has quickly become known for their unique blend of emo, indie rock, pop punk, and easycore. They've been described as part of the "fifth wave of emo," but they bring a distinct and refreshing energy to the genre that sets them apart.Their debut album, Somewhere City, released in 2019, received high praise from music publications, with Pitchfork and the Chicago Reader lauding it as emblematic of emo in 2019 and setting the tone for the genre's next decade. The album's themes revolve around a utopian concept, which counters the typically negative lyrical content found in emo music with more positive messages and pop culture allusions. Following the success of Somewhere City, Origami Angel released their sophomore double-album, Gami Gang, in 2021. This album saw the band expanding their musical horizons, mixing their signature sound with a more experimental approach, drawing comparisons to The Smashing Pumpkins' Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness for its ambitious scope. The band will release their new full length LP titled "Feeling Not Found" on Counter Intuitive Records in September of 2024.

Origami Angel drop 2 new singles from forthcoming LP

Ahead of the release of their highly-anticipated Will Yiip produced third LP, "Feeling Not Found", out on September 27, DC emo duo Origami Angel drop two new songs: "Sixth Cents (Get It?)" and "secondgradefoofight." The pair of blistering tracks arrive with another double music video, directed by Britain Weyant, that finds vocalist/guitarist Ryland Heagy and drummer Patrick Doherty attempting their own fever dream version of their favorite videos from Green Day, Phoebe Bridgers, Modern Baseball, Taking Back Sunday, Smashing Pumpkins, and Foo Fighters. The mashup of influences in the video captures the sounds and scenes that have inspired Heagy and Doherty over the years. It's the reason why Feeling Not Found is as instantly impactful as it is –– there's so much more than just emo and easycore going on here.

"Sixth Cents (Get It?)" uses angsty hardcore to cut through with sharp and necessary commentary on the music industry. "When you love your job so much that you would do it for free, you can get taken advantage of by corporate greed," Ryland says. "The music industry can be a winding roller coaster, spinning you in directions you can’t predict. The wholesome, artistic nature of your work is constantly in a tug-of-war with the necessity to produce profit for yourself and others. Many artists have the bulk of their income taken away by predatory labels. This song comes from a place of frustration, and is almost laughing at the industry speak that comes from the powers that be."

"secondgradefoofight" begins with an angelic 30-second intro before speeding off into a brain-splitting climax. Lyrically, Heagy expresses deep frustration with mental and emotional overload, and a desire to escape the constant noise of life, both internally and digitally. It's a battle for autonomy and self-preservation, rejecting chaos in favor of solitude and control.
